Massage
Massage is so much more than just relaxation.
It’s the manipulation of soft tissue (kneading, rubbing or tapping) with the hands or an instrument. Research has shown that it can have far-reaching health benefits.
Yes, massages are relaxing. In today’s stressful world, who doesn’t love to spend an hour in the salon while a trained professional kneads out knots and loosens our muscles? But besides the obvious benefits of relaxation and stress relief, massage can help with:
-
pain, muscle soreness and tension
-
improving circulation
-
reducing fatigue and improving energy and alertness
-
soft tissue strain and sports injuries
-
lowering heart rate and blood pressure
-
depression and anxiety
-
improving immune function
-
headaches
-
insomnia related to stress
-
range of motion
-
myofascial pain syndrome
In addition, massage can also produce feelings of caring, comfort and connection, increasing your emotional wellbeing.
We offer several different types of massage:
Relaxing Massage
Relaxation massage consists of gentle to medium pressure to the body, manipulating soft tissues to promote relaxation. When your body starts to relax, stress hormones decrease, your heart and breathing rate will reduce, and your muscles will relax.
A relaxing massage is a good choice if you are new to massage or are sensitive to touch.
Relaxing Massage with Aromatherapy
You can enjoy one of our relaxing massages, with wonderful aromatherapy essential oils by Aromatherapy Associates.
Aromatherapy massages have an emotional healing component as well as the usual benefits of massage. This type of massage can help:
-
boost your mood
-
reduce stress and anxiety
-
reduce symptoms of depression
-
relieve muscle tension
-
relieve pain
Your massage therapist is happy to choose an essential oil to use, or you can let them know if you have a preference or dislike a particular smell.
Deep Tissue Massage
Deep tissue massage is a type of massage therapy that focuses on realigning deeper muscles and connective tissue layers. It is beneficial for chronic aches and pains and contracted areas such as stiff neck and upper back, low back pain, leg muscle tightness, and sore shoulders.
We use some of the same strokes as a classic massage, but the movement is slower. The pressure is deeper and concentrated on areas of tension and pain in order to reach the sub-layer of muscles and the fascia (the connective tissue surrounding muscles).
Fascia Blaster Massage
Fascia blasting is a form of fascial manipulation. It involves a hard-plastic tool called the Fascia Blaster, which Ashley Black invented. The tool looks like a long stick with little claws or feet attached to it. By massaging the body, one area at a time, with the fascia blaster, we loosen the fascia (the connective tissue surrounding muscles) and help reduce cellulite. Fascia blasting is excellent for tight muscles & injuries. We recommend you drink plenty of fluids after the procedure.
Hot Stone Massage
A hot stone massage involves placing hot flat basalt stones onto specific parts of the body in combination with the techniques of a regular massage.
Hot stone massage may help:
-
ease muscle tension
-
improve blood flow
-
alleviate pain
-
promote relaxation
-
relieve stress
This type of massage is beneficial for people who have muscle pain and tension or simply want to relax.
Lava Shell Massage
The Lava Shells owe their magic to a mixture of minerals. These include dried sea kelp, dead sea salt, algae and essential oils that cause a chemical reaction within the shell to create heat. An added benefit from the heated shells is that they give off calcium ions, which transfer to your skin during the massage. Calcium can help to firm and regenerate the skin.
An alternative to the popular hot stone massage, the Lava Shells can radiate heat for up to an hour. The continuous heat allows your therapist to provide a seamless warm, full body massage.
Lava Shell massage can:
-
boost circulation of blood and lymph
-
soothe aches and pains
-
reduce swelling and water retention
-
relax you.
Myofascial Release
Myofascial release massage is a soft tissue treatment of skeletal muscle pain and immobility. Myofascial release involves applying gentle pressure into connective tissue and fascia in a slow and precise manner. A myofascial release technique helps to detect restrictions and can facilitate the release of the fascia. Injury, surgery, poor posture or inflammation of tissues can create myofascial restrictions that produce pressure and pain upon sensitive structures.
Pregnancy Massage
Pregnancy massage is a hand-on massage either during pregnancy (prenatal) or after birth (postnatal). Beauty Essence has two massage tables that have a cut-out section to accommodate a pregnant tummy. We pad the area out with soft blankets, so it's beautifully comfortable. You'll love that you can lie on your front with ease and relaxation with no concerns for your baby. It feels incredible.
Pregnancy massage promotes relaxation, soothes nerves, and relieves back strains and tired muscles in expectant mothers.
Indian Head Massage
Indian head massage is a relaxing holistic treatment that uses acupressure massage to release the stress accumulated in the tissues, muscles and joints of the head, face, neck and shoulders. It aims to rebalance your body's energies.
An Indian head massage stimulates blood flow, lymph and oxygen in your upper body. It, therefore, may relieve sinusitis and stress and help you sleep better. Indian head massage is also said to help cure headaches (even migraines), eye strain and anxiety. It can even help you concentrate better at work.
At Beauty Essence, we have a specially designed headrest that is really comfortable and will enable your therapist to access your whole head, neck and shoulders.
We often use oil in Indian head massage, but please let us know if you prefer not to have oily hair.
Things to Consider – Before, During and After Treatment
Before:
-
Shower on the day of massage
-
Bring a change of clothes if you are worried about oil getting on them
-
Bring a hair tie (we have plenty if you forget)
-
Arrive in plenty of time for your massage, so you have a few minutes to sit and relax beforehand
-
Let us know about any medication that you’re taking (this may affect the types of oil we can use or the strength of pressure we can use in the massage)
-
Let us know if you have any allergies or if you are sensitive to certain smells
-
Let us know how you feel just before the massage so we can tailor your treatment accordingly
-
Ensure you have nothing planned after your massage as you may feel tired or sleepy
-
Drink plenty of water on the day of your massage
During:
The treatment room will be softly lit with soft music playing.
You will have time at the start of the session to remove your clothing down to your underwear (we have disposable G-strings, so please let us know if you need one).
The massage couch has a Tempur mattress cover to provide extra padding. It will be warm and covered in light fleece blankets to keep you cosy during the treatment.
If you have chosen an aromatherapy massage, we will ask you to select an oil.
We have various Gua Sha’s, cups and fascia blasters that we can use during your treatment to help treat areas of tension, cellulite or muscle tightness.
If you prefer not to talk during the massage, just let us know that you want to shut off and completely relax.
After:
-
Immediately after treatment, you may feel tired or sleepy. Don’t plan anything too strenuous for after your treatment.
-
Continue to drink plenty of water after your massage.
-
Book regular treatment sessions for maximum benefit.
